Fun backstory of the LC Loopers

It was fun to see that a photo of what some call the “La Conner Loopers” on their bikes and trikes in “A view from the editor’s eye,” the centerfold in last week’s La Conner Weekly News.

Much ado has been made about this old dude crossing mileage milestones, when the attention really should be about all of the other characters that have been the inspiration to get me up and rolling every morning. Weather permitting.

Fred, the recognized leader of the Loopers, caught me tooling around on my new trike shortly after Barb and I moved to Center Street. He invited me to join him and a group of neighbors that rode around town each morning. These guys (we have had as many as nine), have been a large part of what makes living in La Conner so special.

Each loop consists of a little over 6 miles, and that is all inside the town limits. I now ride a pedal assist trike, which allows me to climb the steep hills in town. The pedometer logs every mile traveled, and it amazes me how fast the miles add up. We recently crossed 5,000 miles, and have 6,000 in sight.

Thanks guys, you make growing old fun, and I am looking forward to much more fun with you.

Look for us in the parade on July Fourth, we might have some special guest riders.
