  • The count moves towards 6,000

    Ollie Iversen|Feb 14, 2024

This photo was taken Jan. 29, when Brad Bradford, one of the original Tillinghast bike riders, celebrated when his 5-year-old, three-wheeled tricycle's odometer hit the 5,000-mile mark. That is a lot of miles. Brad and many others bicycle around La Conner almost every morning at 10 a.m., as long as it is not raining or snowing....

Rotary plants 'Ethan Smiles' tulip bulbs in roundabout

    Ollie Iversen|Nov 1, 2023

La Conner Rotary Club members and La Conner parks commissioners joined forces the morning of Oct. 19, planting tulip bulbs in nine wine barrels inside the roundabout east of town. Special care was used as some of the bulbs planted are individually donated "Ethan Smiles" bulbs. They are in the three barrels located at the points of the roundabout as you drive into it from any direction. The remainder of the six barrels were planted using bulbs purchased from the Roozens at Washington Bulb...

  • Boat sculptures now grace Waterfront Park

    Ollie Iversen|Dec 20, 2017

La Conner’s Waterfront Park, the town’s newest, is making a statement of cooperation between the Town and the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community with the re-placement of a tug boat, a canoe and a wheel sculpture to the park from the Skagit County Historical Museum. The sculptures were originally at Gilkey Square, representing two types of boats used in these waters, a tug and a canoe. Each one shows our reliance on the water, showing the area’s commerce and transportation. The writing on the whee...

  • Big fish on ice, for now

    Ollie Iversen|Dec 21, 2016

As the photo shows, our snowy Salmon Slide is resting for the winter. Yet here is the good news: Conner Waterfront Park was started with a $50,000 matching grant from the Osberg Family Trust, which after some time fundraising, we were able to match. Well, you know it must be the holidays, because Town Hall received a letter from the Osberg Trust offering a second matching grant — this time for $25,000 for all donations from Dec. 2 through all of 2017. As you have seen, we started building...

  • New waterfront park site of yearly rowing event

    Ollie Iversen|Feb 10, 2016

A big group of visitors had a close-up look at recent changes to La Conner’s waterfront on Saturday. The Sound Rowers and Paddlers, an open water rowing and paddling club, always hold their first race of the season on the first Saturday in February in La Conner — and this year was no different — but the scenery has changed, with the launch site in the middle of a makeover to become the new Conner Waterfront Park. About 50 human-powered watercraft, including kayaks, outrigger c...

  • Singing in the holidays

    Ollie Iversen|Dec 2, 2015

It’s official. The 2015 holiday season has begun. Maple Hall was decked out in holiday splendor when the Christmas concert started Sunday evening. The musical event was coordinated by Madeleine Roozen Cook and featured our fabulously talented Skagit Valley musicians and singers. An incredible amount of musicians were there to entertain the packed house, singing and playing all our favorite carols, from “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas,” to “Baby it’s Cold Outside.” Members of our prestigious S...

  • Work is starting on Conner Waterfront Park

    Ollie Iversen|Oct 7, 2015

Have you noticed the activity at Conner Waterfront Park these past several weeks? We started planting trees along the southern border of the park to define where the park stops. By using cedars and so forth, we will be able to reduce the vision of our adjoining industrial neighbor and make it look more park like. La Conner’s Public Works Department started by digging a trench from the water to the road to plant the trees and also put in a temporary water line so the new trees would have water f...
