The first day of summer vacation was a time of reflection for La Conner School board members, who while grappling with difficult budget issues going forward, found time at their June 12 study session to honor the achievements of student leaders and athletes and middle school science teacher Maddie Huscher.
Huscher was recognized as a Regional Teacher of the Year, one of nine finalists for top state teacher accolades.
“It’s a really big deal,” La Conner Superintendent of Schools Will Nelson said of Huscher’s selection. “She’s getting a lot of really great news coverage, including from KING-TV.”
Huscher was presented flowers by board president Susie Deyo, as was outgoing student representative Eleanor Drews.
Drews, who received her high school diploma the prior Thursday and is bound for the University of Washington this fall, said she appreciated board members seeking her views.
“Every time you asked for input,” Drews told the board, “it was so valued, it was so important.”
The board also saluted coaches and members of the La Conner High golf and track teams that qualified for state competition this spring.
State hurdles champ Tommy Murdock received an ovation and handshakes from board members for his twin gold medal finishes.
A list of personnel actions addressed by the board included the resignation of Middle and High School Assistant Principal and Director of Career and Technology Education Tanya Houle and secondary health and fitness teacher Suzanne Marble taking a leave of absence.
Randy Swift, the transportation department’s head mechanic and a longtime district bus driver, submitted his resignation.
Retiring La Conner Schools Director of Special Programs Andy Wheeler said the district is continuing to pursue grant funding to support the popular Braves Club after-school program. If the proposal is successful, it will result in a broader Braves Club format, he said.
