AND THEY ARE OFF TO THE RACES – La Conner students came out to cheer the track and field team on May 24 for the state 2B track and field championships in Yakima last Saturday. Senior Floyd Dent took mid, if not high, fives from classmates before getting on the bus.

Lightning struck twice at the Washington state 2B track and field championships on Saturday.

First, an actual lightning storm delayed the final round of action. Then, La Conner High School junior Tommy Murdock repeated as a state hurdles champion.

Murdock, who captured one state hurdles title in 2022, swept the 110 and 300-meter hurdles in lightning fast fashion this time around, leading the team at Yakima.

Murdock ran a personal best 15.01 in the 110s, which he needed to edge Raymond senior Morgan Anderson, who clocked a 15.03 for the silver medal.

Murdock then set a new personal standard in the 300 hurdles with a 39.00 finish, well ahead of runner-up Judah Milton of South Bend, whose 40.29 effort placed him ahead of bronze medalist Evan Gunning (40.34) of Davenport.

The La Conner standout has been a model of consistency this spring, racking up repeated triumphs in the two hurdles events at both league and invitational meets.

Murdock maintained that level of excellence, adding a 10th place finish in the 100-meter dash and running a leg of the fifth place Braves' mile relay entry. Jacob Pommels, Thomas Kitchen and Brenden Kitchen joined Murdock in the 4x400 state final.

Pommels finished 10th in the 200-meter dash. Teammate, Isaiah Price placed 11th in the javelin.

As a team, the La Conner boys finished ninth overall with 24 points.

Morgan Huizenga finished fourth in the javelin with a personal best toss of 111-01 to pace the Lady Braves, who totaled eight points and ended up 24th on the girls' team leaderboard.

Huizenga placed seventh in the high jump as well.

Lydia Grossglass placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles and Maeve McCormick picked up a 12th place finish in the long jump to round out the Lady Braves' performances.

State golf tournament

In another state championship competition, La Conner's Gage Tenborg finished tied for eighth in the Washington state 2B golf tournament in Tumwater last Wednesday. Tenborg carded a two-day score of 161 (79-82), matching George Berens of Crosspoint Academy.

Sammy Williams also represented La Conner on the boys' side of the tourney, while Abby Udlock and Natalee Koch competed for the Lady Braves, all finishing outside the top ten.
