Library Happenings

Upcoming events at the La Conner Swinomish Library:

For kids, this week it is "Eat the Rainbow to Improve Gut Health!" Make and take a healthy snack and learn about your personal microbiome in your tummy. Thursday, May 25, 3-4 p.m. Hosted by April Emanuelson, F.N. P.

If you missed the Seed Swap last Friday, mark your calendar and save your seeds for our next swap November 2.

Friday, June 2, at 3 p.m. come to the drive-in theater in the library to watch "CARS." As an added attraction kids can decorate a (box) car to sit in prior to the show. We have boxes compliments of Pioneer Market.

Ukeleles! Monday, June 5, 1-2:30 p.m. This is an interactive concert. Join us.

School is almost over! Time to gear up for summer reading.

The Summer reading program starts June 12. The theme this year is "All Together Now!," focusing on kindness, friendship and unity. Our mascot is the honeybee since they work together so beautifully. To launch the program we are hosting local beekeepers Chuck and Charlene to talk about honeybees, Monday, June 12, 12:30 p.m. Sign up at the library and get the packet of information and a reading tracker.

For teens we have a fresh assortment of GN (graphic novels) romance and Marvel. For those who enjoy fantasy, try the GrishaVerse series by Leigh Bardugo. We have quite a few of her books. Try the Truly Devious series by Maueen Johnson. If that isn't exciting enough for you, "Fire Keeper's Daughter," by Angeline Boulley is a riveting tale about an Ojibwe teen caught up in a romance/murder/detective adventure that also explores modern Native issues. For Sci-Fi fans, "The Last Cuentista," by Donna Barba Higuera, is thought provoking and, hey! she won two awards for this story.

Remember, spending just 15 minutes a day reading, or some literacy related activity, will keep reading skills sharp. You can read recipes or road signs, play board games, write postcards or just play and pretend; conversations, reading aloud to children and word games are also beneficial.

Continued weekly programming:

Mondays, 4- 6 p.m., Tech Help is offered in 30 minute increments. Sign up at the front desk or call for an appointment. 360 466-1282.

Tuesdays, 3-5 p.m., Dungeons and Dragons.

Fridays, 11-11:30 a.m., Story Time. Singing, movement and lots of stories for young ones.

Check our website, laconnerswinomishlibrary.org for more information. Better yet, come in and check out some books!
