Five shot at Mount Vernon Walmart

Gunshots were exchanged inside the Walmart in Mount Vernon Sunday, July 17 at 9:50 p.m. The initial investigation from the Mount Vernon Police Department found that a group of 19-year-old males entered Walmart together and had an altercation with a separate group of males. During the dispute shots stuck five people.

“A couple of individuals were in the store when another group showed up,” Mount Vernon Police Chief Chris Cammock told the press. “They ran into each other in the store, and that’s when the confrontation occurred and shots were fired.”

Three of the injured were transported by ambulance and two were taken via private vehicles to Skagit Valley Hospital. A male customer, 72, a male employee, 24, and one of the involved 19-year-olds were then transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment.

The on-site investigation was completed at 4:30 a.m. July 18. Detectives are reviewing video, interviewing witnesses and following up on information obtained. No arrests have been made. There is no indication that this was a situation where individuals entered the store intending an active threat event.

Mount Vernon police Lt. Mike Moore told reporters that it is too soon to say whether the altercation was gang-related.

After police declared the store safe and all victims were accounted for, a puppy was found in a shopping cart inside. From social media outlets, it was learned a shopper was separated from their pet. Attempts to reach them have been unsuccessful.
