Girls win district track; boys place second

 


By capturing the NW2B District track crown in Coupeville on Saturday, the La Conner High School girls completed a three-sport hat trick this year.

La Conner girls’ teams had earlier won the district volleyball and basketball championships. They kept pace in track, outpointing host Coupeville 78-47.

La Conner was led by multiple event winners Ellie Marble and Kaliana Bill plus strong showings in the relays,

Marble won the 300 hurdles and shot put while Bill swept the long jump and triple jump.

Marble, Lydia Grossglass and Hannah Cook ran 1-2-3 in the 300 hurdles, with Marble posting a winning time of 0:53.9.

In the shot, Marble topped the field with a toss of 31’ 6 ¾”. Teammate Delaney Cobbs was third at 27’ 6 ¼”.

Bill went 15’ 3’ in the long jump and 31’ in the triple. Rachel Cram was the triple jump runner up at 30’ 4”.


Seniors Hannah Cook and Sarah Cook each captured gold in solo events. Hannah Cook won the 100 hurdles in 0:19.04. Sarah Cook triumphed in the javelin with a heave of 99’ 1”, besting teammate and runner-up Emma Keller, whose throw was 83’ 4”.

In the relays, La Conner won the 4x200 and 4x400 events. Bill, Marble, Morgan Huizenga and Mari Waltner combined to post a winning time of 1:57.04 in the 800-meter contest. Bill, Huizenga, Sarah Cook and Cram won the 1600-meter competition with a 4:45.76 finish.

Cram, Huizenga, Waltner and Hannah Cook placed second in the 4x100 sprint relay, clocking a 0:54.91.


The versatile Grossglass earned spots on the medal podium in three events. She placed second to Marble in the 300 hurdles, was third in the 100 hurdles and took bronze in the 100-meter dash.

Sammy Davidson and Cobbs added to the Lady Braves’ medal count with silvers in the 800 meters and discus, respectively. Huizenga (second) and Marble (third) picked up medals in the high jump.

Waltner added a third place in the 200 meters, while Hannah Cook was bronze medalist in the 300 hurdles.

Hurdler Tommy Murdock paced the La Conner boys at Coupeville, sweeping the 110 (0:16.71) and 300 (0:42.67) hurdles as the Braves finished second in to Coupeville. The host Wolves totaled 98 points. La Conner followed with 41. Friday Harbor was third at 29.

Isaiah Price joined Murdock atop the medal stand with a championship javelin throw of 137’-9”. Murdock also teamed with Isa Gonzales-Rojas, Thomas Kitchen and Jacob Pommels to win the 4x400 relay in a 3:47.12.


Murdock joined Kitchen, Pommels and Kali Adams to place second in the sprint relay.

Pommels (200 meters), Floyd Dent (3,200 meters) and Alexzander Martin (discus) finished second for La Conner in their respective individual events.

Adams (100 meters) and Brenden Kitchen (800 meters, triple jump) added third place finishes.

District first place finishers automatically advance to the 2B Bi-District Meet this Friday in Chehalis. Others earning district medals may also qualify as different leagues finalize their results this week. Top runner-up finishes at the district level can earn trips to Chehalis depending on their comparative times and distances.
