Sarah Cook is Girls Basketball Player of the Year

Always a versatile player during her four years with the La Conner High School girls basketball program, Sarah Cook regularly filled the team’s stat sheet.

Now Cook is filling her personal trophy case with a slew of honors following a stellar senior campaign during which she helped lead La Conner to a fourth-place finish at the Girls’ 2B Hardwood Classic in Spokane earlier this month.

Cook has garnered a NW2B/1B Most Valuable Player recognition and was selected to play in the State 1B/2B Senior All-State Game. Earlier this season, she was voted the Washington State Player of the Week.

Now, add one more.

Cook is the Skagit Valley Herald’s choice for the Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

“Sarah has consistently shown that she can play with anyone at any level, anywhere, any time,” head coach Scott Novak told the Weekly News.

Thus, it comes as little surprise that Cook will play both volleyball and basketball for Skagit Valley College following graduation.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing her play there,” Novak said.

Her grandfather, Marvin Wilbur, Sr., a La Conner standout in the 1950s, is among Skagit’s top all-time athletes. His photograph is displayed inside DuVall Pavilion on campus.

Playing a tough ’21-22 schedule featuring 1A-4A foes, Cook scored a 17 point-per-game clip, grabbed seven rebounds per contest, and dished off three assists each night.

“Sarah always gives 100% in practice and maintains incredible focus,” Novak said.

Cook’s work ethic and training regimen meant that she didn’t miss a game from her sophomore season on, he added.

That durability enabled Cook to join the ranks of La Conner’s career 1,000-point scorers. Novak said her 18 points in a 67-52 La Conner trophy day win over Raymond in Spokane brought Cook’s four-year total to 1,008.

Her ultimate plan is to transfer to a four-year school to study education and environmental science and work toward a bachelor’s degree.
