Sarah Cook has consistently recorded big numbers for the La Conner High School girls’ basketball team, filling the stat sheet with points, rebounds, assists and steals.
It was a no-brainer when it came time to vote for top post-season honors.
Cook was chosen the NW2B Girls’ Most Valuable Player in recent balloting conducted by league schools. She helped lead her team to fourth-place at the state Hardwood Classic in Spokane earlier this month, scoring 25 points in the team’s second round victory over Lake Roosevelt,
The next day she had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the 67-52 state trophy victory over Raymond.
That effort earned Cook a post-game interview on the NFHS Network, which airs national livestream subscription broadcasts.
“It was our last game,” Cook stressed during the interview, “so we wanted to leave everything on the floor.”
The team received a number of All-League recognitions. The spotlight shone on Cook’s fellow teammates, juniors Josie Harper and Ellie Marble, and seniors Rachel Cram and Juna Swanson.
In addition, La Conner eighth-grader Ellalee Wortham was tabbed for All-League second unit honors.
“I’m proud of the girls,” head coach Scott Novak said. “These honors are well-deserved. It represents lots of hard work put in by them over many years. If I were able to vote for my own players, we would have had six players on the (All-League) first team.”
Sarah Cook and Juna Swanson have been selected to play this Saturday in the annual Washington State Girls’ Basketball Coaches Association (WSGBCA) Senior 1B/2B All-State Game at King’s High School in Seattle.
On the boys’ side, two La Conner High School boys players received All-League kudos for their respective roles in bringing the Braves to within one win of a Spokane appearance. Junior Isaiah Price was voted onto the All-League second team and senior Miles Sidzyik garnered honorable mention.
