Good things are well worth the wait.

Just ask La Conner High School boys’ head basketball coach C.J. Woods.

Woods, eyeing his team’s Jan. 25 NW2B matchup at Friday Harbor since the start of the season, saw his patience rewarded with a tense 54-51 road win over his high school alma mater.

With the hard-fought triumph, the Braves improved to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference standings.

For Woods, whose Friday Harbor teammate, Collin Williamson, is a member of the Wolverines’ coaching staff, the outcome could hardly have been sweeter.

“It was a huge game,” Woods told the Weekly News afterward. “It came down to the end and it was fun to coach against my old teammate!”

The matchup was equally fun for his team, who the week before had downed Darrington, another longtime league rival, by a 62-35 margin.

This time the game was tight the entire way.

After trailing 15-9 in the early going, La Conner responded with a 14-7 second period spurt to lead 23-22 at the break. The Braves were fueled in the first half by three perimeter treys from Miles Sydzik, who finished with a game-high 17 points.

La Conner extended its margin to 40-36 entering the final stanza, then staved off a late Wolverine comeback bid.

Sydzik hit five three-pointers. He was joined in double-digits by Isaiah Price and Mason Wilson.

Price tallied 15 points, including a three-ball. Wilson added 11, his second straight double-figure finish after netting 10 points in the 59-49 setback to 2A Sedro-Woolley last week.

Cameron Wilson and Dylan Roberson led Friday Harbor (4-7 overall; 2-5 in league) with 11 points apiece.

The game marked the first of four key league tests, with games scheduled at Orcas Island (Jan. 28) and Mount Vernon Christian (Jan. 29) and at home Feb. 1 with Concrete.

Still, there was time to savor the victory over Friday Harbor.

“It was a really big game for us,” Woods stressed. “We’ve got some momentum and are playing together basketball.”
