Your library this summer

Summer Reading Program

Your World in Color: Summer Reading 2021 at the La Conner Regional Library started this week. It is open to anyone under 18 who has access to a La Conner Library card.

Our theme this year is Color! Think of all the ways you see, feel, wear, eat, use, describe and make color. Color is a great focus for summer reading because it offers so many avenues for exploration. There are many books about color and many colorful characters, like Elmer the elephant who is not gray at all.

We have non-fiction books about the science of color: “Light Makes a Rainbow” and “Amazing Animal Disguises.” Some books address the social aspects of color: “The Colors of Us,” “Please Pass the Skin Color,” “The Stars Beneath Our Feet” and “I Am Not A Number.”

Plus, the United Nations declared 2021 the Year of Fruits and Vegetables and we have cookbooks for children with colorful, easy recipes. There is so much to read and enjoy that revolves around color. To sign up, visit us at lclib.lib.wa.us or at the library by appointment. You may also call the library to sign up over the phone. Once you are enrolled, you will receive:

  • an introduction packet which will have a list of featured books available at the library
  • activities that explore aspects of color
  • a reading tracker so you can record the time you spend reading.

This summer, all participants will be encouraged to set their own reading goals. We recommend reading at least 20 minutes a day to keep skills sharp. Reading in any genre is encouraged. Set your goal, track your reading and bring the tracking page to the library before the end of August to receive a free book.

Throughout the summer the library will be sending supplemental activity ideas out by mail and we will also post on the library Facebook page. There will be DIY activity kits to pick up at the library, which will be announced on Facebook or sent to your email. If the weather cooperates, we may have some impromptu art projects in the library parking lot. Notifications will be sent via email and Facebook.

Katryna Barber coordinates the program as the library’s youth specialist.
