“Hugo Helmer: Skagit’s Own Music Man” is the Skagit County Historical Museum’s new exhibit, now open. It celebrates accomplished accordionist Hugo Helmer, featuring his life and legacy.
Helmer instructed hundreds of children throughout the region, established Hugo Helmer’s Accordion Band in the 1930s, a dance band and first marching accordion band in the U.S.
Be prepared for Scandi-monium! Go to the Museum website for a schedule of performers of live accordion music in the Museum gallery by former band members Leif & Sunnie Accordion Duo, Sylvia’s Fjordsong Band, and invited guests.
Eldeen Gilbert will play at 2 pm on Saturday, June 26th. She is a former student and member of Hugo Helmer’s Marching Accordion Band. In the 1950s she played with the Barnyard Farmerettes group, 3-time winners of KING-TV Tryouts.
Leif & Sunnie Accordion Duo will play at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27.
