For decades it has been a tradition for the La Conner High School Alumni Association, the oldest active organization of its kind in Washington state, to hold an annual banquet each spring to honor that year’s graduating seniors.

For the second year in a row, COVID-19 will trump tradition – though not entirely in 2021.

La Conner alums are being asked if they would attend a banquet and program in September, by which time more vaccinations will have been administered.

The fall banquet proposal, along with scholarship donation and dues payment options, is featured in a flyer sent last week to all La Conner graduates.

“This year’s banquet will not take place in June due to COVID-19,” alumni leaders said in a statement included in the flyer, “but will be held at a later date, depending upon the feedback we receive from members of the association.”

September, coinciding with the start of the 2021-22 school year, is targeted as an alternate month for the banquet.

Last year the alumni association adapted to the pandemic by airing the banquet virtually, recognizing members of the graduating class of 2020 and golden anniversary class of 1970.

The La Conner Alumni Association awards scholarships to members of the graduating class annually. The La Conner Community Scholarship Foundation, whose goal is to serve all La Conner graduates, administers the alumni association scholarship.

Scholarship donations help continued support of La Conner graduates. Alumni are encouraged to donate $1 for each year since their graduation year, though any amount is welcome and appreciated.

The banquet is always anticipated by alums, who look forward to renewing friendships, sharing memories and enjoying an entertaining after dinner program.
