ELECTION UPDATE Wesen, Browning win Skagit County commissioner elections

Sen. Ron Muzzall wins LD 10 seat

November 14, 2020

Republican District 1 County Commissioner Ron Wesen has won re-election, defeating Democrat Mark Lundsten of Anacortes. He led by 4,213 votes after Friday's ballot tally; some 3,400 ballots are uncounted. Peter Browning, director of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce has beaten Democratic Mount Vernon Councilmember Mary Hudson. His lead is 10,717 votes.

No candidate has posted victory or concession statements on their social media.

Sen. Ron Muzzall (R-Oak Harbor) has won election to the Legislative District 10 seat he was appointed to last fall when then Sen. Barbara Bailey retired early. Democratic Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson conceded in a phone call to Muzzall. She posted that news on her campaign’s Facebook page Thursday, writing that the “small number of votes left to count, they will not change the end result in my race.”

Muzzall led Friday by 1,714 votes. Under 4,000 ballots remain to be counted in the multi-county district, almost all in Skagit County. It is not known how many outstanding ballots are from LD 10 precincts, the southwestern portion of the county and northwestern Snohomish County..

Stanwood attorney Greg Gilday, a Republican, led former Democratic Island County Commissioner Angie Homola by 871 votes for the LD 10 state representative Position 1 after Friday's ballot count. Homola leads by 2.4% in the Skagit County precincts, but that lead has steadily eroded since she was up by 15.4% in the county on Nov. 3.

Homola also posted on her Facebook page Thursday, recognizing she would “need to earn almost all of the remaining votes” to win.

LD 10 Position 2 Rep. Dave Paul (D-Oak Harbor) held a 748 vote lead over Skagit County Republican Party Chair Bill Bruch Friday. Paul's margin in the Skagit County precincts is 932 votes. He is the likely winner. Again, neither candidate has posted on social media since Paul's Nov. 5 statement that he was "humbled by the initial returns." He has always held a lead, though it has continuously shrunk.

Attorney Tom Seguine has pulled to within 214 votes of Elizabeth Yost Neidzwski for Skagit Superior Court Judge Position 3. Yost Neidzwski led by 2,326 votes election night; Seguine has gained votes with each count of ballots. This trend favors him.

The statewide Referendum 90, requiring all public schools to provide comprehensive sexual education, has been approved in Skagit County by 1,821 votes, 51.35%. of the total Statewide the Referendum is winning with 57.9% of the vote.
