Delaney Cobbs, a junior at La Conner High School, is the Soroptimist International of La Conner honored student for October. Delaney participates in soccer and wrestling, and also joined “Varsity in Volunteering” last year. Students earn a letter (V) for working a prescribed number of hours – a new and meaningful world of involvement in which students are recognized with a varsity letter. She has already earned her letter from her wide ranging involvements in the community and school.

Wrestling is a big part of her high school day. She participates on the Burlington-Edison girls’ team because LCHS does not have a team. Wrestling, Delaney says, is the fastest growing sport for women athletes. Coaching La Conner “littles,” ages 3 to 10, in wrestling was another part of her volunteering, as was serving up healthy food at event concessions.

Delaney comes from a family of local educators: her grandmother, Melody, taught kindergarten in Stanwood for forty years; her mom, Mandy, works in the fifth grade with Swinomish tribal students; she has two aunts who teach in Sedro-Woolley and Snohomish, respectively, and another relative was our beloved Dixie Otis, a La Conner teacher for more than thirty years. As a sign of the times, Delaney assists one of her aunts with providing remote teaching since she is quite proficient with technology and understands the student perspective. She also helps her mom at the Swinomish study hall.

Dixie would be proud.

Delaney plans to study nutrition, a six year college program, and help student athletes maximize their performance. The University of Hawaii is a possible destination.

Delaney, daughter of the proud Mandy Buck, has been awarded a gift certificate to Vintage La Conner, the thrift shop made possible by Soroptimist volunteers and generous donations from the community.
