Go see Mamma Mia!

Go for the musical. Stay for the concert.

Make your reservations now so you can get an aisle seat for the get-on-your-feet dancing when “Mamma Mia!” ends. The cast’s seemingly four encores – and the costume changes for them – are only the cherry on top for the Theater Arts Guild’s production at McIntyre Hall through April 13.

This easy to like, family friendly – though a couple of scenes are R-Rated – musical is one daughters ought to bring their mothers to. Here is a happy, we’re all heroes and things are just going to get better as the wedding tomorrow approaches show. Don’t worry about the premise or the plot. This is all about singing and dancing to 22 ABBA songs. And laughing throughout, for this is truly a comedy.

Sophie (19-year old Sierra Jones on her way to musical theatre at Western Washington University) is 20, getting married on the Greek Island she has lived on since birth. Her mom runs the taverna. Dad? Well, “dot-dot-dot.” Sophie has mom’s 1979 journal which details three magical nights with three guys, each ending “dot-dot-dot.”

Which one is her father? Sophie has invited all three. One of them will walk her down the aisle. Maybe.

The guys look and sound and act and sing their parts admirably.

Which one is the dad? Is it writer explorer Sam Carmichael (Paul Henderson). English entrepreneur Harry Bright (Clarence Wash)? Or the architect, Bill Austin (Dale Aspelund)?

How will Donna, the mom (Joey Wasson) respond to these three guys coming back into her life, all at once?

Lucky she has best friends attending, Rosie (Kelly Visten) and Tanya (Jenny Woods).

Twenty years ago they performed as Donna and the Dynamos. Yes, they will perform again.

The 13 named characters in the cast are characters. All hold their own singing, dancing, delivering their lines and adding their own comic touches. There are solos. There are duets. Group numbers. And ensemble singing and dancing, as the company comes out of the wings, performs and melts back out of sight.

Listing the 22 songs takes too much space. Suffice to start the list with: “Mamma Mia!,” “Dancing Queen,” “S.O.S.,” “The Name Of The Game,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Voulez-vous” and “Waterloo,” as an encore.

Fiancé Sky (Miles Doorn) and his bachelor buddies have a great scene dressed in wet suits and snorkel masks.

The 30 member ensemble is amazing but space does not allow listing their names. Applaud wildly to show your appreciation. Do the same for the many-membered production team, each one critical to the show’s success.

Shout outs for Stage Director Jane Skinner, who teamed with Assistant Director TJ Fantini, Stage Manager Brian Paxton and Choreographer Maluhia Vander Griend. Costume Designer Phyllis Hammatt led the sewing and designing of the costumes, including the glam rock suits the cast wear for the encores.

Conrad Askland, music and vocal director, conductor and playing keyboards, led seven other musicians jamming under the stage.

“Mamma Mia!” plays Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. through April 13 with an April 7 matinee. Tickets: http://www.mcintyrehall.org/.
