Time travel returns to Skagit Historical Museum

March 20, 2019

Just a couple weeks after moving clocks forward an hour, folks at the Skagit County Historical Museum in La Conner are poised to set in motion the long path to 2069.

Reversing the process that unfolded in December, when a time capsule embedded at the museum since 1969 was opened amid much fanfare, the same metal box will be refilled with contemporary items and stored away March 28 for another 50 years.

The public can see future history in the making that night during a special time capsule reception event at the museum.

The fun starts at 6 p.m.

There are a variety of objects to be placed in the capsule, each reflective of local life in 2019, said Museum director Jo Wolfe.

Those are to include information and newspaper accounts related to the Museum's 50th Anniversary Celebration, student lists and signatures, photographs of Museum activities during 2018, items provided by Museum Golden Anniversary auction purchasers, and acknowledgement of the winner of a Kiwanis essay contest.

Those will all be strategically wedged inside the nearly 15-inch square and four-inch deep capsule.

"It will be the same box," Wolfe told La Conner Weekly News, "as it fits perfectly in the spot in the wall and we are able to re-use it. Museum staff are coordinating the selection of items. There's limited space, so we'll hopefully fill it up, but not have to turn anything away."

March 28 promises to be a busy day at the Museum. Prior to the time capsule reception, the popular Skagit Stories featured exhibit, a key feature of the Museum's Golden Year festivities, will be closed.

But a few short hours later the Museum will briefly shift its focus from the past to an unpredictable future.

All are invited to be time travelers in spirit that night.

"Join us," said Wolfe, "as we fill the time capsule and place it back in the wall, ready to be opened in 2069."
