'Eat out' first Wednesdays to help kids

December 27, 2018

The Kiwanis Club of La Conner and half a dozen town restaurants are posed to make monthly donations to assist students in the local school district. Their program, “Eat Out for Kids,” has a simple premise: eat out at any of six restaurants on the first Wednesday of the month and the restaurants will donate a portion of their day’s sales to the Kiwanis. The Kiwanis then provide scholarships and donates to school programs.

Sounds good. The only missing variable: lots of customers eating out Wednesdays at Anelia’s Kitchen and Stage, La Conner Seafood & Prime Rib, La Conner Pub & Eatery, Orange Rainbow Espresso & Ice Cream, Santo Coyote or Slider Café.

Santo Coyote’s Cristal Perkins and Patrick Ball, co-owner of Slider Café, have the same enthusiasm and motivation for participating. Perkins called their participation “one of the most important things for us. When we opened our restaurant in a small community like this it was important to be part of the community. Helping kids with scholarships is super important.”

Ball agrees that the program “is an excellent way of helping the kids in need.” He appreciates the Kiwanis holding meetings in the Café and individual Kiwanis eating there. The Café’s participating is for a great cause, he says.

Reader’s role: bring your appetite and your wallet and eat out at these places the first Wednesday of each month.
