Larsen talks news in the making
December 12, 2018
In a brief interview while filling food boxes at the La Conner Sunrise Food Bank Dec. 3, U.S. Rep Rick Larsen (D, Everett) made these points:
On the Navy’s expanding Growler flights:
The Navy’s response to an October letter he sent “was not positive” and “not the last word in getting the Navy to respond to concerns that the community has.” He cautioned his position will not go “as far as the Sound Defense Alliance wants to go.”
He said he was working to “have the Navy understand” its responsibility “to be fully responsive to the community.”
The Alliance is a citizens group working to stop the Navy adding 36 jets and their over 24,000 additional flights from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
On the Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives priorities in the new legislative session in January:
The first day of the session they will introduce HR 1, aimed at restoring democracy by making it easier to vote, changing campaign financing laws to expose dark money in politics and require presidents to disclose tax returns. He said the Democrats have a positive agenda of “jobs, fixing health care and work force development.” They will also work to turn back climate change, he said.
The Nov. 30 Washington Post headline was: “House Democrats’ 1st bill aims for sweeping reforms.”
On impeachment: Larsen will support any impeachable offenses that result from the Mueller investigation, but until that time he does not support impeachment against President Trump.
“Our primary responsibility is to hold the President accountable. The special counsel has to do his job and our role is protecting the special counsel,” Larsen said.
Larsen also noted that he would chair the aviation subcommittee within the transportation committee. This is the first time the ten-term representative will chair a subcommittee.
