The K-kids of La Conner Elementary School spearheaded a food drive through October and part of November. They labeled and placed boxes at every classroom door, counted the amount of food brought in each week and charted the progress of each classroom. Overall, the food drive brought in 1,920 items of food to provide to the food bank. Mr. Hunter’s 5th grade class won a pizza party for bringing in the most items.
The students loaded the Sunrise Food Bank truck last Thursday afternoon.
K-kids is the youth version of Kiwanis Club international and is sponsored by the local La Conner Kiwanis Club. The organization helps promote service to others as an important part of the community. These La Conner Elementary students certainly “gave back” in a big way by helping the food bank.
Sunrise Food Bank volunteers unloaded the 2,023 pounds of food, weighed it and stored it at their distribution center at Garfield Masonic Hall early Friday afternoon. “Every year at this time we are extremely thankful for the students’ effort and their parental support, said Susan Widdop, food bank director.
