Last Saturday folks gathered in Maple Hall in 1960s attire to celebrate the Skagit County Historical Museum’s 50th anniversary. Equally important, they were making donations to ensure that children not yet born appreciate its centennial.

Likewise, the Kiwanis’ Chowder on the Channel was raising funds in support of La Conner children’s school needs, gathering people of all ages in the middle school earlier on Saturday.

Still below the radar screen is the school district levy campaign. The district will soon be explaining why it is important to approve a school levy next year.

Before November ends the Library Foundation will be promoting attendance at its Festival of Tiny Trees, raising a bit more money for the much bigger library that will be built on Morris Street.

The people planning the renovation of the Pleasant Ridge School have been quiet, but they will be in the news to discuss the over $30,000 needed to replace the building’s roof. That amount is a down payment on the additional monies required for renovating the entire building.

Likewise, the Museum of Northwest Art has capital and operating costs they will be explaining to the community.

Citizens in and around our little town are steeped in history, culture, children and the responsibilities they have to care for the legacies long created and those yet to be started. That is both a burden and a joy, requiring champions and stewardship.

The community is blessed with strong leaders and committed citizens in every arena. Some lead, many follow and all of us are a part of maintaining and enlarging the fabric in this place we call home.
