Vote 'D' for the future

October 17, 2018

Trump?

Recently the Skagit Valley Herald had two letters to the editor urging people to vote Republican. The writers have that right, but I assume that they are over 50, have no spouse, no children, and no grandchildren.

Why assume that? As explained in the recent UN report on climate, without immediate action to reduce climate destroying emissions by 45 percent in the next 20 to 25 years we face a planet that is going to be ever more uncomfortable in which to exist. Many areas will not have the water or food, and for portions of the year will have heat extremes beyond abilities to cope.

Why not vote Republican? Trump has eliminated emissions standards for coal and relaxed them on autos and methane releases from drilling and fracking oil and gas wells. He has proposed allowing radiation releases from nuclear facilities. These and other actions will severely impact global climate and environment.

Instead, billions of tons will be added and tens of thousands of deaths will occur. Plus, multiple severe weather events each year once predicted to be one in 100 or 500 years.

Are Trump and his advisors dumb? Stupid? Uncaring? Racist? Work on environmental problems started in earnest in the 1970s was set back by Reagan, with the major progress during the Obama years. Are they being undone because Obama was black (his mother should account for half)?

This is only the climate / environment side. Trump and his administration have at least one despicable action a day. And this does not even mention his bullying and his and the GOP’s war on women.

I hope you will think before you vote and if you care about anyone or anything you will look for a name with a “D” after it.
