Klein explains MoNA resignation

January 17, 2018

Since my resignation is noted in the Jan 3 article about MoNA, I feel that I must respond. I will primarily address my situation. But, I know that my feelings are shared. We have been residents of La Conner for 11 years. My wife and I have both volunteered at MoNA since we moved here. I have hosted the docents as well as many other volunteer and charitable groups at my studio. I have contributed financially and with my work to MoNA since we moved to La Conner. We care deeply for this community and MoNA,

My resignation was not because I rejected the capital campaign or the strategic plan.

In fact, I have in the past, and still endorse both.

My issues concern the management of the museum that runs much deeper than what is mentioned in the article.

I would also note that not six, but twelve board members resigned in 2017.

Coupled with the resignation of excellent and very reputable, key personnel it should be obvious that serious problems exist.

I hope you will also be able to see the complete consultants’ report, as parts of that report are taken out of context in the article.

Recognizing the fiduciary responsibilities of board membership, our departure was absolutely not because we decided to “get off the train,” it was because we could no longer be a part of, take responsibility for, or endorse managements actions.

I, like the others would return to MoNA when there is a change of management.

We believe in the institution, the vision and the plan.

We hope to help MoNA survive and achieve those goals.

Steve Klein
