Morris Street deserves a little love

December 27, 2017

Dear Editor,

What is good for Morris Street is good for Main Street, because we are the first impression of the town as visitors and guests arrive. Additionally, it is easier to maintain a positive impression than to overcome a negative one. I think it is time that Morris Street got the attention it so badly needs.

Why can’t Morris Street have an event? Why can’t poor Morris Street get any love or support?

Requests by the Morris Street merchants to have some type of event, parade, or farmers market is met with complete opposition from all those who are in a position to support or work with merchants.

It has been said that the downtown businesses, and other town representatives, are opposed to any type of event that would slow or impede traffic from getting to First Street.

So consequently, the Chamber and the Town of La Conner doesn’t seem willing or likely to help.

As a Morris Street merchant, I have been met with opposition to any suggestion of an event on Morris Street.

Yet, during the music events in Gilkey Square my store is virtually empty on those Sunday afternoons.

While the parades march down First Street, the stores on Morris Street become quiet and still, mine included.

Consequently, I believe it should be okay for the spotlight to occasionally shine upon La Conner’s other “Main Street.”

Additionally, there seems to be other areas that are disproportionate between Morris and First Street. There are no parks, or art installations along Morris Street. This street shares the same name as one of La Conner’s first artists Morris Graves.

I would love to hear your feedback, thoughts or suggestions.

Krista Sunday
