Socks collection for winter warmth underway

As the seasons change, many are already thinking of winter. Recall the bitter cold last winter. Being prepared for the wet and cold is critical, even though it’s hard to shift gears with all the beautiful sunshine that we have had this summer. Regardless, as seasons change, some are unable to provide enough warm clothing or even find shelter from the cold for themselves or their families.
However, one local family is not only getting themselves ready, but they want to help others who are less fortunate.
Anna Young lives on the Swinomish Reservation with her partner, Jesse Edwards, a Swinomish Tribal member, and their family. They recently started a sock drive to help others. They hope to collect 300 pairs of wool socks to donate to the homeless in Seattle. They also want to provide socks to local folks to help keep more feet warm. Young thought it would be a great project to involve their children, especially their three-year-old daughter, Lailoni Hope Edwards
Young said, “ I want to teach Lailoni the value of helping others. We feel blessed with everything we have and want to give back. All our family is helping with this sock drive.”
The family has been busy making signs for the collection baskets and informing people where they can drop off sock donations. Donation sites include: the Swinomish Housing Authority, The Swinomish Senate Room and the Swinomish gym’s youth center. La Conner locations are being sought.
