“Don’t pull the trigger ‘till you know you’re sure of your target,” instructed Officer John Riddle as he encouraged members of the Swinomish Police Explorer Scout Program during target practicing last week.

Six members of the program, Austin Edwards, 17, of Darrington, Corrina Kaubin, 17, Swinomish, Wayne Fornsby, 19, Swinomish, Justin Selvig, 16, La Conner, MacKenzie Wight, 18, La Conner and Natasha Gegen, 18, of Anacortes, practiced target shooting, some of them for the first time.

Officer Val Lockrem with the Swinomish Police for two years meets with them every Tuesday at Fire District 13’s parking lot, the Swinomish gym, the gravel pit or on ride-alongs.

“Approximately 12 have gone through the program,” Lockrem said. “The post is only two years old, so no one is old enough to be cops yet.”
