La Conner fells Loggers in tree-mendous fashion

January 1, 1970

When La Conner faced Dar-rington’s Loggers Friday night, it was the Braves who were a cut above.

La Conner High axed Dar-rington 52-20 for a pivotal league road triumph that allowed the Braves to remain unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play and improve to 8-1 overall.

Quarterback Sean Hulbert and running back Wil James rushed for three touchdowns apiece before the break, as the Braves churned out 361 yards on the ground.

La Conner bolted to a 42-6 halftime lead and never looked back.

It was a deficit even the Loggers found hard to trim.

“I really liked the way we performed,” Braves’ head coach Johnny Lee said afterward. “It was probably our best effort and most convincing win.”

The victors amassed nearly 500 total yards and were equally impressive when it came to stopping a potent Darrington attack.

The key, Lee said, was his club finding the end zone and then forcing the Loggers out of their comfort zone.

“Defensively,” he said, “we made them pass a little more than I think they would’ve liked. The kids did a good job against the run early and continued to tackle well throughout the night.”

La Conner, meanwhile, didn’t mind airing it out in the least.

Hulbert completed six of 14 passes for 76 yards, while backup Max Miller was perfect on four tosses, netting 24 yards.

It was La Conner’s run game — made possible, Lee said, by dominant play in the trenches — that opened up the airways.

“I felt our big boys up front really created some running lanes for the backs,” he said.

Lee said Hudson Zavala and Jimmy Brooks were effective getting to the edge, with Hulbert and James consistently moving the chains running between the tackles and piling up yards after initial contact.

James rushed for a team-best 110 yards on 10 attempts.

Zavala also broke the Century Mark, going for 101 yards on just five carries.

Much of Zavala’s total came on a brilliant 52-yard scoring dash after intermission.

James had capped a near perfect first half for La Conner moments earlier with a 20-yard TD scamper.

The Braves yielded a deep touchdown pass on a fourth down play that helped make the final score more respectable.

Still, Lee had no complaints.

He was able to empty his bench and get playing time for much of his roster, giving 10 different players a chance for carries.

“I felt the kids played with a heightened intensity at Darrington,” Lee said, “and their effort on every play was phenomenal.”

He’ll be looking for the same kind of work ethic when La Conner High closes out regular season play tomorrow, Thursday, at home opposite archrival Concrete.

The Nov. 7 kickoff at Whitaker Field is set for 7 p.m. and will feature the annual Senior Night recognition.

The Braves defeated Concrete 35-7 in the two clubs’ earlier meeting seven weeks ago.
