  • Memorable basketball moment

    Roberta Nelson|Jan 14, 2015

I’m not much of a sports fan, but in the 1930s, I did have a little interest in basketball. I recall a time when something unexpected happened, and I was lucky enough to be in the audience at that time. There was a basketball team made up of local high school graduates called “the Town Team.” I can’t recall if my brother Vernon played on the team. He did play on the La Conner High School team, and he recalled playing against Edward R. Murrow, at that time, who was living in Edison. They were som...

  • Flood barrier option council meeting's high water mark

    Bill Reynolds|Dec 3, 2014

New technology might someday help solve an age-old concern in the La Conner area. A plan to deploy portable geotextile-lined flood barriers as part of a future ring dike system on the northeast edge of town was part of an otherwise watered-down Thanksgiving week Town Council agenda last Tuesday. The mesh barriers, similar to those used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when battling flood conditions on the Mississippi River, would supplement construction of proposed new dike sections north and east of La Conner High School. The earth-tone...

It remains to this day a staple in every holiday movie marathon. When army buddies and Broadway directors Bob Wallace and Phil Davis follow singe...

  • 'Somewhat Clean' cleans up at brain meet

    Mickey Bambrick|Nov 19, 2014

La Conner High School’s Knowledge Bowl team, “Somewhat Clean,” got off to an exciting start last week when they tied for First Place at the first of three qualifying District tournaments. What’s most impressive about this particular win is that schools of every size in Northwest Washington compete together in these early rounds. Due to La Conner’s small student body size, they are ranked as a “2B” category school, so when they compete in the Regional and State competitions later in the school...

  • Braves shipwreck Vikings; make school history

    Bill Reynolds|Nov 12, 2014

The third time’s a charm. The fourth, historic. At least that’s the case for the La Conner High football program, which earned a fourth straight trip to the State playoffs with a convincing 53-20 NW2B win Thursday at Orcas Island. It marks the first time in modern school history that Braves grid teams have qualified for post-season in four consecutive years, an elated La Conner head coach Johnny Lee said Sunday afternoon. “I did some research,” Lee confirmed, “and this senior class is the first one to make it to the playoffs all four years of...

    Karla Reynolds|Oct 29, 2014

The tragic shots rang out at Marysville-Pilchuck High School last Friday, but the emotional impact was felt on La Conner campuses as well. The latest in a string of horrific school shootings dating to Columbine 15 years ago has hit close to home. Closer, even, than the 30-minute drive separating La Conner and Marysville. “We have several students who are related to the shooter and also to the victims,” explained a somber La Conner School District Superintendent Dr. Tim Bruce, who addressed board members and staff at their monthly meeting Mon...

  • Nordic students, teachers enjoy warm welcome here

    Bill Reynolds|Oct 8, 2014

The local tourist season isn’t quite Finn-ished yet. La Conner played host to four teachers and 16 high school students from Finland last week, all of whom enjoyed a whirlwind four-day stop that included cruises, shopping trips, restaurant dining, pumpkin field tours, and Friday Night football. And, by all accounts, the visit came off perfectly. Even Puget Sound’s early October weather cooperated. How their trip to La Conner came to pass is almost as complex as the Finnish language itself, whi...

The demolition is expected to be finished by Monday. But before construction of the new La Conner Middle School can be built on the site, pilings will have to be put deep into the ground to support the buildings. The influence of the Swinomish Channel and tides makes it necessary to install more than...

  • La Conner's Gamble pays off in key league soccer win

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 17, 2014

The odds seemed stacked against them, but the La Conner Braves had an ace up their sleeve in last week’s league soccer opener with Friday Harbor. That ace was defender Kyla Crawford, who shifted gears in the first half and in the process helped kick-start La Conner’s season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory. Crawford, who started the match on defense, was moved to offense after a Friday Harbor goal and eventually teamed with Isis Gamble to notch the tying score. Taylor Reimland later con...

  • Lady Braves drive spikes into big-school foes

    Bill Reynolds|Sep 17, 2014

Bigger isn’t necessarily better. The Woodinville and Squalicum high school volleyball teams have learned that lesson the hard way.
