  • Memorable basketball moment

    Roberta Nelson|Jan 14, 2015

I’m not much of a sports fan, but in the 1930s, I did have a little interest in basketball. I recall a time when something unexpected happened, and I was lucky enough to be in the audience at that time. There was a basketball team made up of local high school graduates called “the Town Team.” I can’t recall if my brother Vernon played on the team. He did play on the La Conner High School team, and he recalled playing against Edward R. Murrow, at that time, who was living in Edison. They were som...

  • Flood barrier option council meeting's high water mark

    Bill Reynolds|Dec 3, 2014

New technology might someday help solve an age-old concern in the La Conner area. A plan to deploy portable geotextile-lined flood barriers as part of a future ring dike system on the northeast edge of town was part of an otherwise watered-down Thanksgiving week Town Council agenda last Tuesday. The mesh barriers, similar to those used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when battling flood conditions on the Mississippi River, would supplement construction of proposed new dike sections north and east of La Conner High School. The earth-tone...

  • 'Somewhat Clean' cleans up at brain meet

    Mickey Bambrick|Nov 19, 2014

La Conner High School’s Knowledge Bowl team, “Somewhat Clean,” got off to an exciting start last week when they tied for First Place at the first of three qualifying District tournaments. What’s most impressive about this particular win is that schools of every size in Northwest Washington compete together in these early rounds. Due to La Conner’s small student body size, they are ranked as a “2B” category school, so when they compete in the Regional and State competitions later in the school...

The third time’s a charm. The fourth, historic. At least that’s the case for the La Conner High football program, which earned a fourth straight trip to the State playoffs with a convincing 53-20 NW2B win Thursday at Orcas Island. It marks the first time in modern school history that Braves grid teams have qualified for post-season in four consecutive years, an elated La Conner head coach Johnny Lee said Sunday afternoon. “I did some research,” Lee confirmed, “and this senior class is the first one to make it to the playoffs all four years of...
