La Conner High volleyball team wins big on Senior Night

In a season like no other, the two-time defending state champion La Conner High volleyball team continues to post familiar results.

La Conner defeated NW2B rival Coupeville in straight sets on Senior Night at Landy James Gym Thursday, the team’s sixth win in as many outings.

The hosts withstood a good start by Coupeville, which broke to a quick 2-1 lead in the opening set, to record a 25-12, 25-14, 25-15 triumph before a supportive home crowd.

While Coupeville played well in stretches, the Lady Wolves had no answer for La Conner’s dominant play at the net.

Emma Keller fueled the La Conner attack with 28 assists, many of those feeds going to Ellie Marble, who finished with a match-best 20 kills.

Marble filled the stat sheet, adding 11 digs and two service aces.

Sarah Cook chipped in six kills, 11 digs and four aces. Libero Rachel Cram added 10 digs.

Marble (7-of-7), Cook (19-of-19) and Cram (13-of-13) were all perfect from the service stripe.

Seniors Maya Masonholder, Katie Watkins and Anna Jane Thulen, who were honored during special pre-match ceremonies, were key factors in La Conner winning its sixth straight contest.

Masonholder notched nine digs. Watkins showcased her versatility with eight kills and seven digs. Thulen was flawless on seven serves.

“I am so proud of my seniors,” said La Conner head coach Suzanne Marble “They have played since fifth grade through great times and adversity.

Three straight years to state, one eighth place finish and two state championships and (they) were poised for another title run.”

Then, COVID-19.

“When COVID-19 hit last winter, we were sure it would be under control by fall,” coach Marble recalled. “But fall turned to winter and still no season.

Winter turned to spring and we were fortunate to get a six-week season.

“It has been a roller coaster to say the least,” she told the Weekly News on Friday, “but last night we were able to celebrate our seniors and play in front of a crowd for the first time in a year and a half.

“Again,” she stressed, “I want to thank them (the seniors) for their commitment to volleyball and especially their commitment to each other.”

La Conner players and coaches were thrilled to play before fans.

“Our first match of the season two weeks ago, we were not allowed fans,” Marble noted. “We had four people in the stands. It (tonight) felt almost normal.”

With no post-season play scheduled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the team wraps up its modified campaign with four NW2B matches this week.

The Lady Braves entertained Concrete Tuesday night. They visit Mount Vernon Christian tomorrow (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. and host Coupeville Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Mount Vernon Christian Saturday in a noon match.

“We’re excited to finish the season with those four matches,” Marble said, “and especially with the final two being at home.”
