Library Happenings April 2021

Your library at work

Construction Update

This past week was exciting for us at the library.

After many delays due to the pandemic, we were able to finally secure our final permits and put our project out for the bidding process.

This move forward comes after years of behind the scenes work from library staff, architects and project management team.

We have been working hard to make this new library a reality as soon as possible.

Bid responses are being collected through May 27.

For interested contractors, there will be a mandatory pre-bid zoom meeting next Tuesday.

A site walk-through for bidders is scheduled for May 13 and the opening of bids will take place on the 27th.

We eagerly welcome these next steps and hope to be breaking ground early this summer!

More dates will be announced as we have them, including demolition and groundbreaking at the new site. Keep an eye on the new library location at 520 Morris Street as we dismantle and recycle the existing building to prepare the site for our new La Conner Swinomish Library!

Library Giving Day

More than 350 library systems across North America came together during our third annual Library Giving Day April 7. We would like to thank everyone who contributed! The new library has been made possible through the many donations from our generous community. This year we raised more than $18,000, including matching gifts of $5,000. These donations will directly benefit our current area of greatest need in the new library, interiors and furnishings. It is remarkable that even in such unprecedented times, our community stands strong and remains committed to building our new library! Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

Earth Day

The library celebrated Earth Day in April. Libraries are a great place to become more aware and appreciative of the world in which we live. We actively participate in reducing, recycling and reusing!

As a community center for shared resources we strive to build a collection of books which will benefit all members of our community. By sharing these resources, we reduce the amount of materials being consumed and reduce the materials being sent to landfills after they are worn out.

When library items have finished serving our community and are ready to move on, our dear Friends of the Library, as they have for years, sell them to raise funds in support of library materials and programs. Items which don’t sell are sent to a second-hand bookseller. If an item has still not found its next home, it is recycled. This process helps extend the life of the items and actively supports a culture of reduce, recycle and reuse.

Fair is starting his second year as library director.
