WORSE THAN IT APPEARS – By 4:10 p.m. Fire District 3 staff put the flames out from what must have been a tremendous crash almost an hour earlier. It appears the white station wagon was south bound and spun into the north bound lane. If so, it pushed the maroon vehicle into the south bound lane.

A two vehicle crash on Fir Island Road shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday sent a plume of thick black smoke high into the air. Bright orange flames were visible from Moore Road southeast of Best Road.

Skagit County Fire District 3 responded at 3:17 p.m. to the 911 call coded as D MVA Rescue. The Skagit County Sheriff's Office responded to the same call.

A white Dodge Journey traveling southbound on Fir Island Road crossed over the center line, striking a northbound red Subaru head on, the deputy investigating determined.

The first deputy on scene was advised that a woman was trapped and injured inside the Dodge. The deputy, with bystanders, extricated her from the vehicle, pulling her to safety.

A driver and front passenger were in the Subaru. All three, from both vehicles, were transported to Skagit Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff's office staff reported.

The crash occurred south of Snow Goose Produce about one half mile and about a third of a mile north of Maupin Road.

The Dodge was turned perpendicular in the northbound lane. It was still being sprayed with foam and water at 4:10 p.m. Its windshield and passenger side windows were completely gone and part of the car was charred black.

The Subaru, it's front end smashed in, faced north in the southbound lane.

Fir Island Road was closed to traffic in both directions. From the north, some southbound vehicles turned around to detour, but by 4:30 p.m. traffic had backed up to the North Fork Skagit River bridge. It did not appear that the road would be opening to vehicles soon.
