Two now arrested post Mount Vernon Walmart shooting

Mount Vernon police investigators have determined that three male juvenile gang members had a confrontation with rival gang members at Walmart in Mount Vernon July 17. Multiple shots were fired, injuring three of those involved. Additionally, a 76-year-old male customer was struck in the leg as he was fleeing. A 24-year-old security guard was also shot numerous times.

Investigators have identified the suspects involved in the shooting. On Friday, July 22, search warrants were executed at two locations in Mount Vernon. Numerous firearms and evidentiary items were located during the search. As a result, one suspect surrendered and was booked into the Skagit County Juvenile Detention on five counts of 1st degree assault.

Late Sunday evening, July 24, a 16-year-old Mount Vernon teen turned himself in for his involvement. The next day the court granted investigators a 30-day magistrate's warrant to hold him while they worked to reconstruct events for what occurred that night from witness accounts, physical evidence, scene reconstruction, video footage, tip call-ins and more.

“Although we’re still early on in the investigation, we’ve made significant progress this past week. We appreciate the patience from our community and cooperation we’ve received,” Sergeant Mike Don said.

“Our community has rightfully expressed alarm at what occurred and wants accountability for these intolerable actions. We share those sentiments and are working at length to bring those responsible before a court,” Police Chief Chris Cammock said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that will assist investigators are asked to call the 24-hour dispatch information number 360-428-3211 or during business hours call Mount Vernon Police at 360-336-6271.
