La Conner High School track teams are picking up the pace as the season’s finish line looms ahead.

Some dozen La Conner athletes compete in district trials at Coupeville this Saturday. Winners qualify for the state 2B meet May 26-28 at Eastern Washington University.

Tommy Murdock, the Braves’ standout hurdler, is on that list in multiple events.

Murdock owns the fastest time statewide among 2B contestants in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles. He has clocked a 0:42.46.

In the 110-meter hurdles, his personal best time is 0:16.69.

Murdock took top honors in both hurdle contests in the NW2B/1B championship meet at Whittaker Field last Wednesday.

“He’s had a spectacular year,” La Conner High head track coach Peter Voorhees told the Weekly News Monday.

Murdock also runs a leg on the Braves’ 4x100 meter relay, which currently ranks seventh in the state. Thomas Kitchen, Jacob Pommels and Ian McCormick are the other members, whose top time in the mile relay is 3:45.71.

In field events, La Conner’s Isaiah Price is 10th in the state 2B javelin standings with a top throw of 141’-1”.

The Lady Braves, meanwhile, have excelled in all three relays – the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.

“We’re sitting really good in all three,” Voorhees said. “We have a lot of versatility there. We can take our top seven or eight runners and put them in there where they’re needed.”

Sarah Cook, Lydia Grossglass, Rachel Cram, Kaliana Bill, Morgan Huizenga, Ellie Marble and Mari Waltner have been interchangeable parts on the Lady Braves’ relay units.

“We have a real good chance to qualify our three relay teams,” said Voorhees.

In solo events, Marble and Huizenga are state 2B medal contenders in the high jump. Each has cleared 5’-0” this spring.

Marble is currently seventh in the state in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles at 0:51.38.

Bill, a senior newcomer to track and field, has the state’s sixth best finish in the long jump with a best leap of 15’-8”.

“Kali is a tremendous athlete,” Voorhees said. “This is just her first year out for track and she’s done great.”

The May 14 event, set for Mickey Clark Field, is a forerunner to bi-district and state competition later this month.
