La Conner’s Kali Adams wowed fans by rushing for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns in the Braves’ 41-0 shutout win at Darrington in the team’s season finale.
The sophomore running back impressed state athletics officials as well.
As a result, Adams was named the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) 2B football player of the week Thursday.
Each week the WIAA, which governs school athletics and activities in the state, joins the Gesa Credit Union in recognizing student-athletes for outstanding performances and important contributions in their communities.
La Conner high head football coach Jeff Scoma, who guided the Braves to a 4-1 mark and NW2B championship in his debut season, said Adams fits the WIAA criteria – and more.
“He’s a quiet kid with a never-say-die attitude,” Scoma told the Weekly News. “He was one of the many leaders of our team on and off the field.”
Adams played an integral role in La Conner’s big turnaround in a shortened spring campaign whose schedule was modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After dropping their season opener 6-0 at Coupeville, the Braves reeled off four straight triumphs to clinch the league title. Their streak included a 21-0 blanking of Coupeville in a rematch with the Wolves, La Conner’s lone game at Whittaker Field.
The four wins exceeded by one the Braves’ total number of grid victories over the prior three seasons, a stretch that followed a string of six straight post-season appearances under previous coaches Johnny Lee and Peter Voorhees.
Scoma, who arrived here from the vaunted Bellevue High program, brought with him that system’s Wing-T offense and with it in place Adams and the Braves were off and running after the early loss to Coupeville.
“Kali’s tenacity, passion and work ethic resulted in a great season,” Scoma said.
Adams will be among key returnees for La Conner when it is anticipated full high school football schedules can resume in the fall.
Scoma, for one, can’t wait.
“I’m excited for Kali,” he said, “and the fact he represents the spirit of our success.”
