Maya Masonholder has framed her involvements at school around sports. As a part of the state champion volleyball team, the varsity softball team and the varsity basketball teams, she lettered five times. The evolution of school sports during COVID-19 is a story in itself!

She also volunteers to support other teams. Most recently she was the manager for the La Conner High School boys basketball team and filmed the boys and girls junior varsity teams. Little league baseball and little league fastpitch have also benefited from her support. The little league teams are great for feeding the programs at the high school, she said.

Maya likes sports because they help her to stay connected with people she might not otherwise get to know.

Before high school, Maya was a student board member for Art’s Alive, where she helped to develop a student art showing and even showed her own watercolor there. She still paints – preferring watercolor landscapes.

The family value that has most influenced her, she said, is persistence. She learned to never give up – even when things are hard – a great asset for a student in the age of Covid – and a great asset for Maya as she enters college next fall. Maya plans to attend a four year college next fall and is awaiting acceptance letters now. At the moment she is most interested in elementary education with an emphasis on art and environmental sciences.

She was influenced in this direction by her grandmother Dixie Otis. Maya recalls how respected Dixie was. Maya believes that that is something worthwhile to gain. She has a good start!

Megan and Brian Masonholder and younger brother Brogan comprise Maya’s proud family. Soroptimist of La Conner, the women who bring you Vintage La Conner (which opens again April 2) will give Maya a gift certificate to the shop.
