Learning certainly looks and feels different now but it is still happening. Our teachers updated their websites with office hours, class times and learning materials. I encourage you to check it out! There are some great learning resources available. Our office staff is planning how to deliver to and retrieve learning materials from families that are not able to access them electronically. All teachers are identifying what learning standards are the most important to explore with their students.

Some creative learning experiences are arising from this challenge:

• A history teacher taking his students on virtual world tours.

• World language teachers encouraging students to practice their language by watching and preparing videos of their words.

• Preschool teachers sharing videos reading books to their students.

• An elementary teacher inviting her students to write her a letter and she will write back.

Many parents have shared questions about how to manage the information and assignment load. The best advice is to establish a routine that works for your family. Here are a few suggestions to help you.

• Only read email at designated times during the day, such as first thing and/or late afternoon.

• File all the email correspondence from teachers in a folder within your inbox.

• Make a list of all assignments for the week.

• Set a learning schedule that is age-appropriate, and be sure to include breaks. OSPI recommends the following engagement in learning.

• Pre-K: 30 minutes a day

• K-1: 45 minutes

• Grades 2-3: 60 minutes

• Grades 4-5: 90 minutes

• Grades 6-8: 20 minutes per class

• Grades 9-12: 30 minutes per class

• Do what you can. Some children may be able to do more, and some less. You also may need to adjust your family schedule based on other factors and that is okay!

We have also heard questions on a few of these topics. Here is a brief update on each. Please watch our website and Facebook page for more information as it is available.

• Graduation: We know our seniors will have the opportunity to earn their diplomas. At this time, we do not know what the options for a ceremony and celebration will be. We have every intention of doing something to honor these scholars!

• Internet: We are working with families who need access. In the meantime, the guest internet at the school district is available. Please stay in vehicles and observe social distancing guidelines if you come use this resource.

• Spring Sports: Our Athletic Director received permission from WIAA to implement a plan that allows our coaches and athletes to connect virtually. Students who complete the tasks and challenges will earn a letter.

• Grades: This is still under discussion, but we know we want to be fair and equitable to all students.

We are grateful to be connected to our youth and their families. Through meal deliveries, sharing technology, and expanding learning opportunities, our students have many opportunities to grow throughout this spring. We miss them and want them to remember to #BeBrave.
